What is Solar System and How does it Function?
At present solar system is the most sought-after energy resource that works upon effectively using solar energy. It is a renewable source of energy and causes less pollution by emitting lesser carbon monoxide gas in the environment. Besides being less harmful, it is cost effective and efficient in producing high voltage electricity.

Off Grid Solar power system is also known as stand-alone power system (SAPS). It is not linked with an electricity grid hence off grid solar power system requires storage battery as backup support. Working upon independently without grid support, 1KW solar panel provides sufficient electricity to illumine 2-4 BHK flats or houses and run appliances. It can also be used at commercial places.
What is Solar Panel Inverter?
Off grid solar panel requires a standalone solar panel inverter to convert the produced direct current (DC) into alternate current (AC). Solar panel inverter is called the brain of solar panel as it inverts energy. Alongside inverting energy, it helps in comparing solar energy production with household consumption and ensures the solar panel is functioning properly.
Based on performance and maintenance, Solar panel inverters are available in different forms and categories. These are:
Straight String Inverter- It is the oldest type of inverter with zero maintenance. This inverter is connected with the solar panel in strings and if one of the panels gets shaded or accumulates dirt, the inverter fails to work. It works better on sunny weather or on a house facing south.
Optimized String Inverter- This inverter has a power optimizer, fitted under each solar panel. It maximizes the performance of the solar panel through constant monitoring and then records the performance of each solar panel individually. Optimising the performance of the solar panel it gets edge over ‘straight string inverter’.
Micro-inverter- A micro-inverter is fitted underneath a solar panel in the similar fashion as ‘optimised string inverter’. It can convert DC to AC on the roof itself unlike the Optimizer that converts DC into string which then converts DC to AC.
Hybrid Inverter- This is the new age inverter with a combination of PV (photovoltaic) inverter and a battery inverter and is available in both string and optimized form. Many people these days mostly prefer this inverter since it is less expensive. With the special feature of wiring an electric vehicle charger with the converter, it has become the first choice among users.
Based on efficiency, there are yet again two types of inverters.
Pulse with Modulation (PWM) Based– This is low efficiency inverter and obviously lower priced. This inverter is used to run 3-4 fans, 8-10 lights, 1-2 Television, 1 Refrigerator in day and night.
Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) Based- This is high efficiency inverter and is very much effective in saving electricity bill.
Appliances that Run on Off Grid Solar Panel
Depending upon the efficiency of the inverter households can use solar electricity to lit up the house and run electrical appliances. It is observed that all the solar panel inverters come with 80% efficiency. Households can run 3-4 fans, 7-8 lamps, 1 refrigerator, 1HP water pump, Air conditioner, Television, cooler etc. During the day, solar panel produces electricity which is stored in the battery by means of an inverter. At night in the absence of sunlight the appliances can be run with the help of the inverter which uses the stored electricity in the battery.
1KW Solar Panel
Off grid solar panels are available as 1KW, 3 KW, 5KW, 10KW solar panels. 1KW solar panel suffices the requirements of a 2-4 BHK house or flat. It provides electricity for 8-10 hours. But to run 1HP water pump 3KW solar panel would be needed. Again to run Air conditioner 5KW solar panel is needed. Similarly, to illumine shop, clinic, small mill, or petrol pump 10KW off grid solar panel is the best option.
Advantage and Disadvantage of Off Grid Solar Panel
Like any other thing, off grid solar panel has both its advantage and disadvantage. Unlike, on grid solar panel, it does not depend on the Government electric power. The prices of off grid solar panel are little high compared to on grid solar panels. The prices are inclusive of the inverter, and battery etc. As a result, it is a bit expensive and the user does not enjoy any government subsidy.
